children learning how to swim

Swim season has begun, public pools have opened, and families are starting to plan pool outings. Whether you are visiting a public pool or you have your own, it’s important to teach your children how to swim - and summer is the perfect time to do it.

Fortunately, there are multiple locations in the OKC metro offering swimming lessons this summer. We have created a map of them to help you make your decision so that you and your family can get swimming!

Why Take Swimming Lessons?

Learning to swim is much more than an activity; it’s an integral life skill. Meghan Bannen, General Manager of Aqua-Tots Swim School explains why:

“Our philosophy is that swimming is a necessary life skill, it’s not an activity,” Bannen said. “You can die if you don’t know how to swim, so we want to make sure that every single child in our program learns how to swim because it is necessary.”

“We focus on swim education and making it a life skill, not just something you learn in two weeks, but muscle memory,” Bannen said. “We focus on ongoing swim education, just like going to school.”

“We do lessons year-round, but summer is our busiest time. However, I recommend that students take lessons in the fall through spring months, because it’s a good physical activity, especially in the winter when it’s too cold to play outside,” said Bannen. Aqua-Tots offers heated indoor pools, as do other locations in Oklahoma City.

What is the best age to start children in swimming lessons? Bannen recommends that children start as young as four months old to ensure muscle memory. However, she says the biggest takeaway is that swimming is a non-negotiable skill that needs to be a part of every child’s upbringing.

Once your child knows how to swim, a swimming pool can be the perfect addition to your summer backyard. Contact us today for a consultation.
